are you just a curly girl living in an oversaturated hair care world?

trying to live your best hair life but your curls are falling flat, frizzy or dry?

well fear not, we’ve dived deep into the world of the curly girl method to help you put some spring back into your locks.

okay, but what is the curly girl method?

the curly girl method is essentially a guide for curly haired women to achieve and maintain the ultimate healthy curls.

the method originates from Lorraine Massey’s book, ‘Curly Girl: The Handbook’ where women are encouraged to swap their shampoo and heat styling to a routine that uses only conditioner and gel.

now it’s important to note, we aren’t just talking about one type of curl. while results will vary from person-to-person, the method is designed for wavy, curly and coily hair.

curly girl no-no’s

while there are a lot of do’s when it comes to the curly girl method, there are probably a lot more dont’s. turns out some of the hair practices you’ve probably been doing for most of your life could actually be stopping your curls from living their best curl life.

the main things to avoid:

  • products containing sulfates
  • products containing silicones
  • heat styling tools
  • fragrance
  • alcohol
  • certain brushes and combs

but don’t let that discourage you. the great thing about this method is it can be changed to suit your own hair type and altered to fit in with your daily routine.

curly girl approved products

it might seem a little overwhelming to sort through all the hair care products out there, so we’ve put together a list of the top curly girl approved products for each step of the method (we’ve gone with a basic one, but there are other steps you can add if

don’t forget, if you’re ever unsure about a product, websites like is it CG? or curlsbot are a godsend and will save you having to trawl through each individual ingredient on the bottle.

 1. final wash

if you’re a virgin to the curly girl method, then you’re going to want to do one last final wash of your hair to be rid of any product that has built up over the years.

for this you will need a silicone-free shampoo that DOES contains sulfate. the reason why you want one with sulfates is because you are wanting to strip your hair of all the old nasties.

2. cleanse / co-wash

co-washing your hair simply means to use a conditioner rather than a shampoo. in this step, it’s really important to scrub and massage the conditioner deep into your scalp for a few minutes to ensure your hair has been properly cleaned. be sure to check that the conditioner is sulfate and silicone-free.

3. condition

once you have completed co-washing, it’s time to hydrate your hair with a conditioner or a hair mask.

the georgiemane 10 minute hair mask is a replacement for your conditioner as it is designed to sink and nurture your hair, leaving your curls hydrated and full of life.

4. style and hold

the last step is to seal all the nutrients in and give your curls some definition (without using any heat). for this you’ll need a microfibre towel or an old shirt which you will use to scrunch your curls together to absorb some of the water and help retain their natural shape.

then you can apply a styling product such moose, gel or cream and let your hair dry naturally.

well there you have it curlfriends, put the above on repeat and you’re well on your way to the curls of your dreams.

but don’t forget, this is a marathon not a sprint, so don’t expect to see crazy results overnight. If anything your curls will look a little lifeless before they really come into their own, but with perseverance, luscious healthy curls will soon be your reality.

who run the world? curls!
